Desoto Sunrise Home for Girls |
|
|
The
Desoto Sunrise Home for Girls will soon celebrate 25 years
of service in 2005. Currently, the home provides 12 beds in
a residential group home for teenage girls who have been experiencing
emotional and/or behavior problems at home, school or in the
community, which is often a result of abuse, neglect or lack
of adequate coping skills.
Many
of the residents at the Home for Girls have experienced difficulties
in their life such as trauma related to sexual and physical
abuse from family members, or dealing with the fact that they
have |
|
|
|
|
no
family whatsoever. Clients reside at the Home for a minimum of six
months but most stay much longer, with some girls staying several
years because there is nowhere else for them to go.
The
Home for Girls provides a structured and positive living environment,
behavioral management, social skills training, anger management
and self-esteem building, as well as physical activities and exposure
to cultural places and events. The Home also provides a complete
treatment program including weekly individual and group counseling,
and family counseling.
The
Home for Girls' program provides social work services and addresses
community needs and problems by helping children gain more adequate
coping skills. When a child successfully completes our program,
they have the ability to move on to becoming a healthy and productive
adult member of society. |

Desoto Sunrise Emergency Shelter |
|
|
Located
in Horn Lake, Mississippi, the Desoto Sunrise Emergency Shelter
was established in 1985 and provides 12 beds for children
in Desoto County and Northwest Mississippi, ages birth to
18. The Emergency Shelter is the only center of its kind in
Northwest Mississippi.
The
staff of the Emergency Shelter work hard to provide the highest
quality of care and services to the children of the shelter.
The
resident children at the Emergency Shelter are often victims
of abuse and/or neglect, or status offenders (runaway or homeless)
and are referred by the Desoto County Juvenile Court of the
Department of Human Services (DHS). DHS can temporarily place
children at the Emergency Shelter for a period of time ranging
from a few days to several months. The children remain at
the shelter until DHS can determine proper placement in the
previous home that they came from, alternative family members,
or placement in a foster home. |
|
|
|
|
Most
of the children are too young to understand the circumstances in their
lives as children as young as newborn infants are placed at the shelter.
Stories range from the three year-old who was found by police unclothed
wandering aimlessly through a trailer park for days; to middle school
kids whose Mommy simply did not want them any longer; and to the adolescent
girl forced by her father into pornography. |
